Bodysgallen Hall

Surrounded by a 200-acre estate with antique gardens

Bodysgallen Hall

Bodysgallen Hall is a historic country house near the coastal town of Conwy and a short hop from the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno. A winding drive approaches Bodysgallen Hall through meadows parkland.

Stay in one of fifteen individually decorated bedrooms (including four Suites) in the main house, or choose one of sixteen cottage suites located in the gardens. Swim, steam and work out at the spa before afternoon tea in the library.

The three AA Rosettes awarded restaurant overlooks the historic gardens; you can enjoy those long summer nights with a stroll after dinner. Bodysgallen Hall is the perfect location for touring Conwy and Snowdonia National Park on a Private Tour of Wales.

The Principal Suites have names connecting to the history of the house. All have views over the gardens or parkland, king-size beds, and a separate seating area.

Self-contained accommodation
The Hall Cottages surround the sheltered courtyard garden. The 17th-century garden is charming and makes Bodysgallen Hall a special place to stay. Some cottages have their private gardens, with occupancy varying from two to four guests.

The Spa Cottages were once farm buildings and converted into six cottages looking out onto parkland and wild meadows. Superior level accommodation has a large separate seating area with varying sizes to accommodate two to four people.

Restaurants
Overlook the lovely gardens while enjoying a superb tasting menu at this three AA Rosette award-winning restaurant that caters with notice to vegan and vegetarian guests. Head Abdalla El Shershaby uses abundant local produce, such as sea bass, wild rabbit, crab, mackerel, duck and gorgeous local soft fruits for deserts with honey ice cream. A three-course fine dining menu is excellent value at £66 per person. Children over six are welcome.

There is nothing quite like enjoying afternoon tea in a historic lounge with a roaring fire or the gardens' summer bird song. Expect freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Add in finger sandwiches, delicate pastries and freshly brewed tea of your choice and a glass of champagne if the mood takes you. Again, excellent value at under £30 per person.

History
Bodysgallen began life as a watchtower with a perfect view of the Conwy estuary and its protective castle; a surprise attack was always possible.
During the Elizabethan era, Richard Mostyn, the High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire, owned the property. The result of marriage meant the house passed to the Wynn family; evidence of their occupation is seen on the southwest gable bearing Robert and Katherine Wynn's initials "1620 R:W: K". The Wynn family were wealthy merchants, thriving in a new 'Elizabethan' age of prosperity.

Today, when you arrive, you enter the oldest part of the house, the hall, as it was known. Here you will find the coats-of-arms of the Wynns, Mostyn, and Vaughans, also seen in the old stained glass windows in the Dining room and stairwell. The layers of history unfold with each observation made by the guests and visitors.

Bodysgallen Hall, like many old houses, has grown from a small settlement into a large country house an estate with formal gardens, stables and farms buildings. A delightful spot for visitors to enjoy and appreciate the historic nature of the property.

Historic House Hotels Limited skilfully restored the 17th Century house in 1980 and passed it to the National Trust in 2008. The Trust is the masters at caring for historic buildings and gardens.

The house is enveloped by a 200-acre estate made up of parkland and gardens, some formal and wild parts. The 17th Century parterre of box hedges encompassing herbs is of great importance and extremely rare. Embedded in the design is a central sundial dated 1678, rose gardens, follies, lily ponds and rockery with cascade. Walls follow the lines of natural outcrops of rock, which infringe on the garden, protecting it from the elements.

Touring Guide
Bodysgallen Hall is in an ideal location for touring North Wales. The Snowdonia National Park is within easy reach, along with the famous string of medieval castles with UNESCO World Heritage Sites status, such as Conwy, Penrhyn, Beaumaris and Caernarfon, to name but a few.

The best garden in Wales is Bodnant Gardens, only a 15-minute drive from the gates of Bodysgallen Hall. A day tour can include Bodnant Gardens and the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the Peak of Mt Snowdon.
