Beaumaris Castle

Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Beaumaris Castle on the Islands of Anglesey

Beaumaris Castle

Discover the crowning glory and fourth link of King Edward’s formidable ring of stone, Beaumaris Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beaumaris means the beautiful marsh, and the location is picturesque on the island of Anglesey overlooking the Menai Strait. The last of a series of four; Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech Castles.

Anglesey is the fifth largest island in Britain and is connected to the mainland via two famous bridges. Thomas Telford’s (Scottish Engineer 1757-1834) Menai Suspension Bridge, opened in 1826 and Robert Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge, opened 1850. Anglesey has many stone-age burial mounds and was the centre of Druid religious culture.

Beaumaris Castle considered by many as a near-perfect medieval castle, although not quite finished. It has four concentric rings of walls with moat and royal docks. The massive exterior walls contain 300 arrow loops or holes. It is a perfected stronghold and easy on the eye; with crafted architectural details. Edward I became distracted by trouble stirring in Scotland. Therefore, his resources and attention were drawn away, leaving the castle incomplete.

Stay and eat at The Bull, a historic Inn, merging heritage with modern touches. Expect roaring fireplaces, excellent food and comfortable rooms. Alternatively, choose traditional Manor House accommodation and stay at Bodysgallen Hall Hotel and Spa. Book your Private Tour of Wales and include beautiful Beaumaris on the Islands of Anglesey.
