Climbing in Wales

If you're looking for an exhilarating adventure paired with breath-taking views, then climbing a Welsh mountain is something for you. The thrill of hiking and reaching a peak is satisfying and good for the mind-body, and soul.

Wales is known for its varied and mountainous landscape, specifically in the northern and central regions. You will find the highest mountains in Snowdonia National Park, where there are peaks with easy paths and dramatic ridges to scramble over. Alternatively, practice your rock climbing with a local expert.

There are a few necessities to remember when you're going on a climb – we are here to make sure you are well-equipped and have the correct gear. If you haven't got decent hiking stuff, we can help you purchase the right clothing and footwear once you are here in Wales. Wales has conditions for expert adventurers and first-time climbers wanting to experience the thrill of reaching a peak. Make a mountain ascent part of your Private Tour of Wales.

The Top Five mountains to climb in Wales;

1. Challenge yourself and climb Snowdon, the tallest mountain of the Snowdonia National Park, with its imposing 1085 metres that are just waiting to be tamed. Snowdon is part of a range of summits that offer views of Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire, Anglesey and even Ireland.

Where to Stay
Our two recommended hotels in North Wales are the beautifully restored Victorian gem, Pale Hall Hotel and on the far northern coast Bodysgallen Hall Hotel, famed for its historic gardens.

2. Pen y Fan, located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, is with its 886 metres the highest peak in South Wales. This beautiful location gives you an experience filled with thrills and some of the country’s finest scenery with waterfalls, verdant valleys and a green, rural woodland landscape. A well-preserved Bronze Age cairn marks the summit.

Where to Stay
Llangoed Hall Hotel is perfectly located for climbing and hiking in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Once the home of the designer Laura Ashley, Landgoed is a calm place with roaring fireplaces and a fine restaurant.

Gliffaes Country House Hotel has an incredible 33-acre Arboretum with plenty of nearby fishing, canoeing and the famous Four Falls Trail, a wonderful waterfall hike. This classic country hotel has 23 traditional decorated rooms. The restaurant offers modern cooking with locally sourced produce.

3. Cadair Idris, with its 893 metres, is on of those mountains that doesn’t get enough credit, making it so much more appealing. If you would like to see a bit of a wilder side of Snowdonia, then this is the challenge for you.

Where to Stay
Get close to Cadair Idris and stay in one of the most romantic lakeside locations. The Old Rectory on the Lake sits at the foot of Cadair Idris, particularly convenient after a hard days hike. Dinner is pre-booked only, and there is a hot tub to soothe those limbs.

4. Snowdonia National Park has many mountains that are worth exploring. Still, Tryfan is one of the most famous and distinguishable peaks with its 918 metres. That alone makes for an opportunity to be adventurous and navigate narrow gorges and airy ridges.

Where to Stay
Apart from Bodysgallen Hall and Pale Hall Hotels, other options include great B&Bs and small hotels in the Snowdonia area. Alternatively, stay for a while and let us introduce you to Unique Places to Stay.

5. The Carneddau, with its unique habitats, rare species and archaeological remnants, makes for an exciting mountain massif. Would you like to tackle Carnedd Llewelyn, which is the highest point with its 1064 metres? Feel free to set yourself that challenge because it will all be worth it in the end.

Where to Stay
Carneddau is another mountain within the Snowdonia National Park, therefore a short drive to Bodysgallen Hall.
