Tour the Cotswolds back roads

Get off the main roads and have your driver guide take the backroads

Blenheim Palace is the private home of the 12th Duke of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's wartime leader.

The stately home was a gift from the nation to the talented military tactician John Churchill. He was rewarded with a Dukedom and became the first Duke of Marlborough. The entire property is dedicated to the great victories over the French monarch King Louis 14th during the Wars of Spanish Succession (1701-14).

Tour the staterooms that tell the story of the first Duke and the wars that changed Europe forever. See the formal Italian gardens and enjoy the amazing vistas created by England's greatest landscape gardener, the irrepressible Lancelot "Capability" Brown. The pleasure gardens feature a wonderful yew hedge maze.

Take a journey through England's countryside and visit the golden limestone villages in the Cotswold Hills. Visit Bibury, which first earned its title of 'the most beautiful village in England' from the artist and craftsman William Morris. Shop for blankets, and high-end woollen items, before going inside a magnificent "wool" church.

During the afternoon, you may wish to tour some of the quintessentially English gardens of the Cotswolds region. Tour Hidcote Manor Gardens is one of England's most exquisite gardens. The design is a series of garden rooms, much like an outside house. The herbaceous borders and chambers of hedges add to the theme and character of the garden - every corner turned brings a smile to the face. There is time for tea and cake before heading home.
