History
Named after the nearby village of Adare, much loved for its thatched cottages, cosy pubs and antique shopping. Ultimately, Adare has always been a convenient place to ford the River Maigue making it a good location for a settlement.

The Manor we see today began in the early 19th Century. Until that point in time, the 2nd Earl of Dunraven and his wife, Lady Caroline Wyndham, lived in a somewhat different house, a fine Georgian House. The Earl suffered terribly from gout, and Lady Caroline thought a distraction from his ailment would help. The once healthy outdoors type of fellow immersed himself in the construction of a new home. The inspiration came from the great houses and Cathedrals of Europe.

The building project was also beneficial for the villagers of Adare. Ireland was in the grip of the potato famine, and the new house provided employment. The Dunraven's contracted skilled local tradesmen and artisans, and Lady Caroline established a School of needlework providing local women's skills and training. The Earl then travelled through Ireland, England and mainland Europe for inspiration and collected ideas.

Adare Manor is a tribute to Dunraven's' sense of vitality and style. Adare became an example of a 'Calendar House', whereby windows, chimneys and other architectural features match the number of days of the week, year and seasons.

The Manor House resembles a chateau, taking inspiration from romantic castles and Cathedrals, the days of chivalry, poetry. Today you feel like you are walking around an old baronial castle with church features; it is a hybrid building that works.

The interior is on a grand scale; The Gallery: a 132 foot long, 26 ½ foot high expanse inspired by the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles and lined on either side with 17th Century Flemish choir stalls.
By the 1860s, the Dunraven's had a grand neo-gothic manor house. Although Lady Caroline quietly promoted the idea that her husband planned and designed the whole house. James Pain was the professional architect on-site.

The vast 840-acre estate encompassing the house consists of grand old trees and rolling parkland. Remarkably Adare Manor remained the family home of the Earls of Dunraven until the 1980s.
Although large, impressive and immaculate, Adare Manor still feels like a family home you visit for a few days of indulgence and merriment. It mimicks the days when the Dunraven's entertained on a grand scale when Royalty, Earls, Dukes and politicians came to be converse, hunt, drink and eat.
