Benjamin Harvey opened the first shop at the same address in 1831. The linen business expanded quickly and sucked up surrounded properties. Ten years later, Benjamin employed a Mr James Nichols who became manager – he married Harvey's Niece. Benjamin died in 1850, and Nichols went into partnership with Harvey's Wife, Anne, to create Harvey Nichols and Co.
