Fortnum and Mason Department Store

The Fortnum and Mason store was founded by Charles Fortnum and John Mason in 1707. Charles worked as a footman in the household of King George III. As footman, Charles would replace the candelabras with fresh candles; he would sell-on the partially used candles to the Queen’s ladies waiting. Once retired, he joined forces with the well-connected John Mason.

Charles knew the demands of high society, and John’s contact enabled them to import exotic goods to supply high-end customers. Foreign visitors to London during the Great Exhibition marvelled at the vast array of products and luxury hampers. The Fortnum and Mason hampers are still much exalted today.

The original Piccadilly store has four restaurant venues, the best food halls and luxury gift departments. It is the ideal place to purchase a gift for loved ones unable to travel with you to London. Don’t miss the external clock with moving figures of Fortnum and Mason bowing to each other on the hour – a delight for young and old. Fortnum's neighbourhood is a great location to stay; it is vibrant and centrally positioned for the Royal Palaces and historic sites. The luxurious Stafford Hotel is a fine townhouse establishment. Dukes London Hotel is tucked away in a quiet enclave, also a short stroll to Fortnum's and Buckingham Palace
