History
Location is vital; yards away from the hotel is St. James’ Palace, which is the official, original royal court. Built back in the 16th century, men dominated the scene. Because there were so many, there was considerable development of stores for men like ties, cigars, wine and even male-dominated private clubs. If you go down German Street, you notice the array of men’s shops; some of them even have royal warrants.

The Georgian and Victorian townhouses surrounding Dukes London are famous; Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde wrote poetry, Ian Fleming drank martinis, and Chopin performed here. The present-day Dukes building first housed the London chambers for sons of British aristocracy before becoming the hotel it is today.
