Discover Harlech Castle, a UNESCO site surrounded by mountains and the Irish sea
Discover Harlech Castle, surrounded by mountains and sea, on a private tour of Wales. Stroll through the town and enjoy lunch overlooking the spectacular beach.
Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the North-West coast of Wales. Harlech sits on a sheer solid crag of rock; once the sea lapped at the base, making attack almost impossible. When the land-side access was cut off by Madog ap Llewelyn, the defenders could receive supplies from the ships moored at the base of cliffs – a lifesaver.
Harlech is one of the famous four strongholds built by the talented military architects James of St George. The others are Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris, all impressive in their way. Harlech must surely be the most dramatic, with Snowdonia as a backdrop and the dunes far below. The castle was constructed in record time with a wall, within walls design, a double skin of daunting defences, a true puzzle for any attacker.
Getting access to the interior of Harlech Castle is an easier process today. Your driver-guide will arrange tickets and give you a highlights tour of the castle. Hear the story of the defending "Men of Harlech" and learn the song; a rousing tune. Stay at beautiful Pale Hall Hotel, a Relais and Chateaux property with an AA three rosette awarded restaurant.
