A brief history of the Isle of Eriska
Erik the Red led the Norse invasion of Scotland's west coast in the 10th century and thought that the name derives from him. The church owned the island for several centuries until it came into the Stewarts' ownership of Appin. They commissioned one of Scotland's premier architects to build the magnificent house we saw today in 1884. He also created the bridge; until then, fording at low tide was the only access.

The house came into the possession of a family called the Clark-Hutchinson's, who occupied the place until 1930. It stood empty and decaying for over 40 years.

In 1973 the Buchanan Smith family bought the house and instigated a major program of refurbishment and extension. As a result, the five-star Eriska Hotel gained a reputation as one of the leading privately owned hotels in Scotland, providing superb service in a beautiful setting.

Touring Guide
The hotel is perfect for enjoying the Highlands and Islands of the West Coast of Scotland. The Wildlife Boat Trip opens your eyes to the beautiful wildlife of the region. See huge pods of bottlenose dolphins, Minke Whales and Britain's most giant bird of prey, the magnificent White Tailed Sea Eagles; with luck, see it hunt and show off its 9 ft wingspan.

Eriska has the best of both worlds, the serene lochs, coast and the majestic Highlands. We can customise our Classic Tour of Scotland itinerary to match your requirements. Visit Oban with its awe-inspiring mountain scenery and rich history regarding clans and religion. An hour drive will take you to the picturesque Inveraray Castle where they filmed an episode of Downton Abbey.

We are happy to tailor a driver-guided tour from scratch to include the places you want to visit and the things you would like to do.
