An Island Retreat

A brief History of the Isle of Eriska Hotel
Erik the Red led the Norse invasion of Scotland's west coast in the 10th century and thought that the name derives from him. The church owned the island for several centuries until it came into the Stewarts' ownership of Appin. They commissioned one of Scotland's premier architects to build the magnificent house we saw today in 1884. He also created the bridge; until then, fording at low tide was the only access.

The house came into the possession of a family called the Clark-Hutchinson's who occupied the place until 1930, after which it stood empty and decaying for over 40 years.

In 1973 the Buchanan Smith family bought the house and instigated a major program of refurbishment and extension. The five star Eriska Hotel gained a reputation as one of the leading privately owned hotels in Scotland, providing superb service in a beautiful setting.

The main house has 16 bedrooms with self-contained accommodation in several 'Hilltop Reserves' located with the hotel grounds. The d├ęcor for both the main home and the 'Hilltop Reserves' reflects the fine quality of the Hotel, and all the rooms offer luxury beds, fine linens, and rich fabrics. Also provided is a wide range of guest facilities with the addition of private gardens and hot tubs for the 'Hilltop Reserves.'

Imaginative menus using fresh and locally sourced produce ensure a memorable fine dining experience in idyllic surroundings.
