History
Standing stones, much like those of Stonehenge, litter the area around Pitlochry. The name is Gaelic, meaning “place of the stones or sentinel stones”. The 1,200-year-old Dunfallandy Stone is a Pictish slab beautifully decorated with horses in low relief; this protected monument is a short walk from town.

In the Victorian age, building a military road nearby to provide access to the Highlands put Pitlochry on the map. Queen Victoria visited 1866 and is known to have enjoyed a unique view called “Queens View”, intrigued Her Majesty assumed the site was named in her honour. However, it is more likely Queen Isabella, wife of Robert the Bruce of the medieval era.

The pride of Pitlochry surely must be the theatre, which has turned the town into a cultural hub for people all over the Highlands. Hiking straight from the Fonab Castle is viable, and we also offer off-road driving and various other adventures from this location.

The Salmon Ladder
The building of the Pitlochry Dam across the River Tummel in the late 1940s didn’t go down too well. Although people thought it would damage tourism and the ecosystem, that was not the result. Having a Dam across the River Tummel would usually block access for returning Salmon. The Salmon Ladder allows 5000 plus Salmon each year to pass upstream using a 310-meter ladder of pools.

There are 34 levels, each level with a pool to enable the fish to leap from one pool to the next. Three of them are for resting; it is an ingenious design. You can stroll down from Fonab Castle Hotel to watch this remarkable event; the best time is from April to August.
