Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa

Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa, set in the New Forest National Park, is a short hop from Southampton Docks

Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa

Chewton Glen neighbours the New Forest National Park, a large parcel of pastureland, heathland and ancient forest. The New Forest pony roams free in the park; they are one of nine typical moorland and mountain British breeds. Go cycling from Chewton Glen and see them in their natural habitat on your Private Tour of England.

Surrounding the hotel is 130 acres of woods and gardens reaching the edge of the New Forest and the coast. A short drive is the stunning Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 96 miles of geological history and incredible beauty.

The dining room is an English restaurant, which means influences are global, and ingredients are local when possible. Tatler says, “..menu is utterly delicious..”. Dine casually at The Kitchen, relax at the spa, stay in a treehouse; oh, the wine list is magnificent. This hotel features on our suggested England's South Coast Tour.

Restaurant
The Dining Room offers a fine dining experience with a mixture of typically English and cosmopolitan dishes. Many of the ingredients come from Chewton Glen’s kitchen garden, which means the produce is locally sourced and seasonal.

Facilities
Chewton Glen provides various facilities, from a state-of-the-art gym to a 17-metre hydrotherapy pool with multiple jets and heated beds, an outdoor whirlpool and a 10-metre heated outdoor pool. There are indoor and outdoor tennis courts where you can practise year-round and nine-hole par-three courses for golf lovers. If you prefer to treat yourself, try the sauna and steam room or book one of the many spa treatments.

History
Much like many places in Britain, the estate at Chewton Glen has a long history. Records show that an estate called 'Chewghton' existed during the Middle Ages, and documents of a house appeared in the early 18th century. What would the owners of Chewton Glen House of 1732 make of the new House? I'm sure they will love the toasty warm outdoor pool, spa and beautifully appointed rooms with aircon – quite a different lifestyle.

The children of the forest
The Hotel has a tremendous literary link, no not Harry Potter, a book called 'The Children of the Forest', the story is of four children orphaned during the English Civil War (1642-1651). Troops pursue them, and they seek refuge in the New Forest. They receive the help of a local gipsy boy. Captain Frederick Marryat wrote this intriguing story while visiting family at Chewton Glen House; the book was published in 1847.

The War years and Hotel
During WW2, they used the area for military training; the House then had three owners before being transformed into a hotel. A guest purchased the Hotel in 2007, taking the business to a new level. The introduction of the Tree House accommodation was a stroke of brilliance. The kitchen garden produces much of the herbs and vegetables for the restaurants, and improving the spa has maintained Chewton Glen's position as one of the World's great Country House Hotels.
