The Famous plant hunter John Tradescant, the Elder, designed the gardens; after visiting Europe, he brought back trees and plants that had never grown in England. Hatfield House is acclaimed as a filming location for the Netflix-hit series Bridgerton and The Favourite with Oscar winning actress Olivia Colman as Queen Anne.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, built the Royal Palace of Hatfield in 1497. Henry VIII seized the property, and this is where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. In 1607 the building was partly destroyed to make way for the current property built in 1611 for statesman Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I. During the First World War; the first British tanks were tested on the grounds. Throughout the Second World War, the first Civil Resettlement Unit used the estate as their headquarters.
