History
Of all the hotels in Dublin, the Westin has probably the oldest locational heritage. The site formed part of the bay where the Vikings landed to establish the city back in 837AD. Dublin is a Viking name, meaning the Black Pool.

Over a thousand years later, the city's trading nature was cemented here in stone when the flagship branch of the Provincial Bank of Ireland was constructed. Designed in the Grand Victorian style by Dublin-born architect William George Murray, it opened in 1868.

For a period in the 20th century, the building housed the College Street Police Station, which held some of the rebels arrested in the 1916 Easter Rising.

The Westin Hotel was established on the site in 2001 but retained the great Banking Hall as an original feature. This magnificent ballroom is one of the most beautiful in Ireland. It features vaulted ceilings sumptuously decorated with stucco detailing, adorned with four chandeliers handcrafted from 8,000 pieces of Waterford Crystal, marble pillars mahogany woodwork. The original vaults that once stored all the money beneath the bank now house a hotel bar called 'The Mint'.

Attractions nearby include Trinity College, which showcases Ireland's most significant cultural jewel, the Book of Kells, a 9th cent illustrated Gospel.
