The Samling Hotel

Classic and Britain's Finest Hotels

Overlooking England's largest lake with Michelin Star restaurant

The Samling Hotel is the best place to stay in the English Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. The year 2017 was a good one for the hotel as the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star after Head Chef Nick Edgar only nine months before came from Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons - another one of our favourite hotels.

The Samling is The Jewel in the heart of England's most beautiful region, a cosy retreat from the unpredictable weather of the Lake District, a very wet area, a generator of rainbows and cloudscapes that have attracted artists and inspired great poetry. The reason for being here is the weather; it is fascinating to watch it change.

The Samling is a place to get away from it all and be surrounded by 900 sq miles of sublime beauty. From the hotel gates, you can tour any one of the 16 large lakes and Tarns (small lakes) in the region and hike any one of the 150 high peaks. We can arrange expert mountain guides and include adventure activities, both our suggested Classic Tour of England and England Adventure Tour include the Lake Districts.

Stay in a wild part of England in complete comfort
Elevated above England's largest lake, The Samling Hotel has a desirable location, within England's largest National Park and one of the world's newest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Samling Hotel is nestled in secluded and self-contained grounds, including fellside (hillside), with direct access to one of the area's most famous scenic walks, and nationally important Ancient Woodland. These are part of the lakes Temperate Rainforest system – one of the world's rarest habitats. The hotel is also working with conservation groups to protect and increase local populations of the native Red Squirrels which live here. I love the hot-tub which sits at the highest point of the gardens, to make the most of the views which stretch for miles. The grounds are a blaze of colour in spring; wildflowers bloom it is magically beautiful. The Samling Hotel is an oasis of luxury and calm and while being surrounded by internationally recognised natural beauty.

Dining with panoramic views
The dining experience is one-of-a-kind in the Lake District and possibly the whole of England. The glass-walled contemporary dining room sits 240 foot above lake Windermere, facing south and west affording panoramic views for miles along the lake – it is a spectacular backdrop for diners, and is unique. The landscapes inspire Executive Head Chef Robby Jenks' seasonal cuisine, using the best of local and national produce; indulge all the senses.

The Wine lovers retreat
If you are a wine lover, you are in luck, the hotel's wine collection is exceptional and award-winning, currently one of the world's Top 500 according to The World of Fine Wines magazine, and hold an AA Notable Wine List Award. The wine cellars are the pride of the hotel, and the range is continuously improved by adding limited releases, and historic vintages; as well as putting in the time to find exciting new vineyards and makers. We call upon the skills of a Consultant Master Sommelier and employ four Sommeliers for our guests' convenience – why not have us create bespoke Wine Tasting, including rare and premium wines as the hotel has the Coravin System. Our dedication to the guests' enjoyment of our Wine List has no limits.

Cocktails galore
Unusually for a country-based hotel, The Reverie, is as sophisticated as the dining and wine list. The discerning world traveller will be well-served by our thoughtfully curated collection of international spirits; selecting the most notable from each country from the most highly regarded makers. The hotel stocks some of the best productions, and rarest vintages, from the world's most highly esteemed houses and makers. Get yourself a bespoke spirit infusion or cocktail tailor-made to any flavour, according to your preferences, it can be to be in your room upon arrival.

Let us make your tour dynamic
The lakes are known as the Adventure Capital of the UK, as well as historically having a world-class cultural heritage, being the home of Romanticism with William Wordsworth, and one of the most internationally famous children's authors, Beatrix Potter. We can source any activity – both outdoor adventure and cultural – that you may wish to experience. Enjoy a private tour of Wordsworth's Heritage Centre, to Winter Mountaineering up England's highest mountain - or the UK's favourite walk as voted for via the BBC. Mountaineering began in the Lakes, and while only 900 miles square, it does not lack for dare-devil activities. Luckily, your Driver-Guide, our office staff and local Adventure Guides will be at your disposal during your Lake District National Park experience.
