Day 1. Cotswolds - Tintern Abbey - Mountain tour
Castle Combe, visit this wonderful Cotswold village, a real film makers dream. The parish church is complete with 15th century clock and the burial of a Crusader knight. We snake our way through the beautiful Wye Valley to Tintern Abbey. The Abbey is one of the finest relics of the monastic age. These romantic ruins stand in the heart of the Wye valley surrounded by wooded hillsides. Lunch in the Wye valley. From Raglan Castle, a moated fortress with massive hexagonal keep, the views are breathtaking.
Ludlow, one of Britain’s loveliest towns. Harmonious mix of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian buildings. The perfect place for afternoon tea in traditional English tearooms. The town has a great 11th century castle rivalled by the huge 15th century church. See Stokesay castle, a perfectly preserved example of a 13th century fortified manor house. Overnight Mid Wales.
Day 2. Conwy Castle - Snowdonia National Park
Conwy, one of the best-preserved medieval fortified towns in Britain with battlemented walls and narrow gateways. See the town and the frowning bulk of King Edward I’s great castle. Climb the towers and explore the interior. Craggy mountains, steep valleys and jewels like lakes make up Snowdonia National Park. We can reach the summit by the famous mountain railway, weather permitting. Overnight North Wales.
Day 3. Bodnant - Harlech Castle - Portmeirion
Bodnant Gardens, the finest garden in Wales, renown for its lily ponds, Italianate terraces and remarkable collection of rhododenrons. Portmeirion, a fantasy village created by architect Clough Williams-Ellis in the late 1920’s. Fountains, statues, waterfalls and buildings of all different styles, quiet amazing. Tour the mountains to the coast. From the coastal road you will see the view of formidable Harlech Castle. The towers raise 200ft on a rocky spur above sand dunes, truly magnificent. Overnight North Wales.
Day 4. Chester - Peak District National Park - Chatsworth
See the City of Chester, famous for its two-tiered shopping arcades dating from medieval times. The perfect stop for lunch. Tour the Peak District National Park. We see the patchwork countryside that makes English countryside famous. Caves, Iron Age hill top forts, delightful towns and villages characterize this region. See Chatsworth House, the palatial home of the Dukes of Devonshire, featuring the grandest of landscaped gardens with maze, sunken gardens, and the 290ft jet of the emperor fountain. Chatsworth's gardens have been used as a film location for the film of Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice'. Return to London.
