    Itinerary Details

Based in the county Berkshire, Highclere Castle was built in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, a famous architect who also designed the Houses of Parliament. The 19th century Victorian structure is the residential home of the Carnarvon family. Built on an ancient site, the original house was recorded in the Domesday Book.

Lord Carnarvon, the 5th Earl and his team discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, since then it has become the home to a number of Egyptian artifacts. The galleries within the castle now house an exhibition that commemorates this historic event. This includes some rare antiquities from Lord Carnarvon’s earlier Egyptian excavations in the late 19th century. Upon Lord Carnarvon’s unfortunate death in 1923, majority of the collection was sold, bar a few items which remained.

Highclere Castle is the film location of Downton Abbey and home to the imaginary Crawley family. The drawing room, library and the state dining room regularly appear in the series. Even the main staircases, bedrooms and the saloon are all used to bring the story to life. The saloon is where the butler, Mr Carson often greets the visitors.

Despite the small amount of servant actors used in Downton Abbey, there would have actually been around 60 members of staff supporting the family a hundred years ago. John Bates and Anna Smith would have been one of many servants in real life.

The decorative gardens are particularly adorable in the springtime, with lavender growing alongside the roses which crawl up the walls. The Monks’ Garden grows many fruit trees, including apple and pear trees. There is a secret garden just off the White Garden which is worth finding.

Your guide will take you around Highclere Castle and give you a full insight on the history of the estate. See the Egyptian collection and visit the rooms that appear in Downton Abbey.

After your tour of the castle, stop and have lunch at a countryside pub before heading to the Oxfordshire village of Bampton, known as “Downton Village”. St Mary’s Church features in Downton Abbey where Lady Edith was left jilted at the altar, also Matthew marries Mary at the church. The village appears in many exterior shots, especially when the servants pop to the village.

    And why we do it!

Our aim is always to be an ‘upgrade’ to anything else available, but without going ‘over the top’ with our prices. We started our business by offering simple day tours and deliver them well. It was not long before our clients were asking us to include more services and events – this we took as a compliment and felt it showed they trusted us and had confidence that we would deliver to a high standard, without the fuss.
