Jane Austen is known worldwide for her popular novels describing the society of pre-industrial England. A short walk through Winchester Cathedral close passing medieval houses you will discover a narrow lane. Tucked beside the headmaster's house of Winchester College is an unobtrusive mustard-coloured building. If not for the blue plaque above the door it would be easy to pass by this ordinary dwelling. It was here that the celebrated novelist, Jane Austen, spent the last few weeks of her life.

Austen dwelt at nearby Chawton for several years, but in 1817 her health began to fail and she came to Winchester with her sister Cassandra to receive better medical care. It was a forlorn hope, and on July 18, 1817, Jane Austen died, and was buried at nearby Winchester Cathedral. Visit Chawton, location of Jane Austens most celebrated home. She spent the last eight years of her life here at Chawton in the 17th century house which is now preserved in her memory. She wrote some of her best work here. Southampton to London or Heathrow: Stonehenge, Old Wardour Castle and Windsor Castle

Drive through the Cathedral City of Salisbury before arriving at Old Wardour Castle. The castle is completely off the tourist trail and has very few visitors due to its location and limited access as a result of narrow country roads.
