The cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral are regarded as one of the most beautiful architectural features in Britain. They formed the backdrop for several ghost, action and Hogwarts scenes.
Behind an ancient door, a set of cold steps leads us down to the crypt, burial place of the monks from the old monastery. It may be possible arrange a private tour of the crypt, revealing Gloucester Cathedral's past.
More about Gloucester Cathedral: its story begins in the late 7th century, when an area of land within the former Roman town of Glevum was used to build a religious house dedicated to St Peter. By the 11th century, Benedictine monks were installed and so a great monastic house was founded. Greater income resulted in ambitious building projects. Popular devotion to the deposed King Edward II, buried at Gloucester, generated the money for further building in the 14th century. The result is that Gloucester is one of the most interesting Cathedrals to visit but, before Harry Potter, this was almost completely forgotten by day visitors from London.
