Polesden Lacey

Polesden Lacey features the work of some the finest architects, designers and artists in the country, and the interiors in particular are impressive. For much of its history it was an influential political salon and there are plenty of spicy society stories to tell which add to the intriguing atmosphere.

Polesden was built in the 1300s for the powerful de Lacey family. In 1797 it was bought by the politician-playwright Sheridan. He lavished money on it describing it as ‘the nicest place in England’. In 1906 Polesden’s real heyday began when it was inherited by Mrs Greville, daughter of brewing magnate McEwan.  She concentrated on making Polesden the ultimate society venue.

The exterior was remodelled by the designers of the Ritz, while the interior was populated with rare treasures and fine art. The garden, first recorded in 1333, was turned into a very English affair with violets and roses. The result was excessive luxury, and the cream of society followed King Edward VIII, the first to sign the visitor book. Mrs Greville was seen as sharp, shrewd and her opinion much sought after. However, many onlookers report on her venomous vindictiveness. She died in 1942 having passed Polesden to the National Trust.
