Exeter
Named after the river Exe that flows through it, the city of Exeter, in the south-west of England, should be explored at any opportunity. With a population augmented by a large student body from the famous Exeter University, it boasts an impressive shopping centre and a vibrant nightlife.
One of the main reasons for visiting Exeter is to take a tour of its magnificent Cathedral. Standing majestically in the centre of the city, is quite simply one of the greatest churches in the country. In the realms of gothic church interiors, it can stake quite a claim of architectural value: it has the longest unbroken stretch of gothic vaulted ceiling in the world, and is worth a visit for this feature alone.
Exeter is also the gateway for the best that the county of Devon has to offer the visitor. To the north and west lie the wild and dramatic landscapes of Exmoor and Dartmoor respectively, whilst to the south basks the coastline of Torbay, including the popular seaside resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. With usually sunny skies and soft sandy beaches, it is not surprising that this region of Devon has been dubbed the English Riviera .
